What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing Mumma offers Hypnobirthing classes in London teaching an in-depth holistic antenatal KG Hypnobirthing programme that is designed to release fear and build confidence by teaching women to trust their bodies practicing relaxation and visualisation techniques.

People often ask me what is hypnobirthing? Are you hypnotised? Hypnobirthing is a technique that teaches us to relax our bodies as the more tension and anxiety we hold the harder the birthing journey can be. During birth we want to encourage the amazing feel good hormone – oxytocin. This is also known as the love hormone, this needs to be produced in our body rather than other hormones that can work against us and lead to exhaustion and a feeling of pain. Hypnobirthing teaches you to have confidence in your body to help you achieve this state of mind and release any negativity.

Breathing is a key part of birth and this course will help you understand different breathing techniques to use throughout the different stages of birth. Your birthing partner will also learn them so they can support you fully when you’re birthing your baby.

Benefits of hypnobirthing:

  • You are likely to experience a more comfortable and sometimes pain free birth.
  • Length of labour is often much shorter with hypnobirthing births.
  • Less drugs and medical intervention are used in hypnobirthing births allowing your baby to develop naturally and easily after they arrive.
  • Your baby will arrive to a serene and relaxed environment, alert and ready to bond with you as nature intended.
  • Mums often bounce back quicker after a hypnobirthing birth as the physical impact of giving birth is reduced.
  • Hypnobirthing babies tend to show less distress during birth, are often very alert after birth and calmer babies.
  • Your birth partner will learn how to support you and have a central and active role in the birth. A truly shared and loving experience.

I’ve had numerous people tell me that giving birth is like running a marathon, you have to dig deep and keep going. When women are birthing their babies they’re certainly amazing at digging deep. To run a marathon we have to train our bodies. Taking part in a hypnobirthing course is similar to training your body to give birth by learning the techniques that will help you achieve the end goal.

Giving birth is an emotional discovery for most women who are amazed at what they’ve achieved. I still look back and think ‘I did that!’ and it’s the most rewarding and amazing thing I’ve ever done.

FAQ’s

Will hypnobirthing hypnotise me?

Hypnobirthing is very different to the kind of stage hypnosis you may have seen on television or at a show. Firstly nobody can make you do anything you don’t want to do as you are in complete control. You won’t be hypnotised by somebody waving a pocket watch in front of you! Hypnobirthing is a form of self-hypnosis and allows you to work with your subconscious mind allowing you to tap in and out of your inner self at any moment. Thus you being in complete control at all times. Hypnobirthing techniques are an amazing tool to have during childbirth allowing you to be calm and relaxed during your baby’s birth.

Will I be guaranteed a pain free labour?

Hypnobirthing does not promise painless birthing, though many hypnobirthing mothers experience a more comfortable and sometimes pain free birth. I work with mothers to eliminate fear which causes pain as it constricts the birthing muscles during labour.  A relaxed mother’s body will produce more endorphins and oxytocin which act as a natural relaxants. Hypnobirthing mothers may still experience sensations of tightening or pressure during labour but hypnobirthing teaches you to work with your body through these sensations.  During my own labour using these techniques meant I was able to have a very positive, calm and focused birth and one that I felt in control of.

At what stage in my pregnancy should I consider a hypnobirthing course?

I would advise doing the course in the second trimester of your pregnancy so you can enjoy the benefits during your pregnancy as well as at the birth of your baby.  It is not so much a matter of learning facts so they are fresh in your mind but more a matter of absorbing the information so that it becomes second nature. Women have learnt the techniques and gave birth two days later. So hypnobirthing works whenever you do it.

The advantage of doing the course earlier means you get the benefits of hypnobirthing during your pregnancy as well as at the birth of your baby.

Is hypnobirthing only for Mothers having a ‘natural’ birth?

Most definitely not. There’s only so much control we have when it comes to planning the birth of our baby. Sometimes mother nature can work against us which may mean we need to deal with certain scenarios e.g. induction, intervention and c-sections. However, the techniques learnt can really prepare you for these situations. Hypnobirthing will help you to remain relaxed so you feel in control, the techniques will give you the tools to ask questions in those situation and achieve the birth that is right for you. Research has shown that it is how a mother perceives the birth experience that makes the difference.

This isn’t my first child can I use the hypnobirthing technique having already experienced labour?

Yes most definitely.  From women who are expecting their second or subsequent baby you hear the words, ‘If only…’.  ‘If only I had known, I would have made a different decision.’  ‘If only someone had told me.’ Hypnobirthing saves you from saying ‘If only…’ after the birth, and helps you let go of a previous bad experience, so that the birth of your second baby can be a wonderful and empowering experience.  You may find this hard to believe, but there are many mothers who can vouch for this.  It is the second time mothers who really know the difference that hypnobirthing makes as they have experienced the differences.
